Quick note--
My Japanese friend Mitsuko said that the recent earthquake felt a little stronger in Takefu than the one that destroyed Kobe--and as that one also destroyed her aunt's house near Osaka, she was scared until she found out where it had struck and that no one was killed.
I also found out that what I had taken to be a bad sewer smell all over town a couple of weeks ago (I had wondered why it was everywhere--usually that's a local problem) was stench from the volcano that erupted on an island south of Tokyo earlier in the month.
So Takefu is a bit more exciting than I'd thought.
